Have you ever had a video interview?
If not, it’s only a matter of time before you do.
With remote work becoming more prevalent, employers are increasingly using video interviews as a way to screen candidates.
Being prepared for this virtual interview is just as important as preparing for an in-person interview.
Here is a step-by-step guide on how to get ready for a successful video interview.

- Checking Your Connection -
The first step in preparing for a video interview is to make sure you have a stable and fast Internet connection.
Poor connectivity is one of the most significant causes of video interview failures.
A slow connection can lead to lag, freezing, and pixelated video.
To check your connection, use online speed tests, reboot your router, switch to a wired connection, and close all other windows or apps that may use bandwidth.

- Testing Your Equipment -
The second step is to test your equipment, including your camera, microphone, and speakers.
Familiarize yourself with the video platform you will use.
Different platforms have different features, settings, and compatibility issues.
A recent study found that candidates who used a professional camera and lighting setup had a higher likelihood of getting hired than those who relied on their laptop or phone.
To test your equipment, use the video platform’s test call or tutorial, and record a practice video.
Adjust your camera angle and lighting and use headphones to avoid echoing or feedback.
- Finding a Quiet Area -
The third step is to find a quiet and private area. A noisy or messy environment can be distracting and give a negative impression of you.
Close the door and windows, turn off notifications or alerts, inform your household members or pets, and avoid eating or drinking during the interview.
A recent survey showed that candidates who had a quiet and clean background had a higher chance of getting recommended for the next interview round.

- Dressing Appropriately -
The final step is to dress appropriately.
Although you’re not physically meeting the interviewer, dressing professionally is still important.
Your attire can convey your attitude, personality, and attention to detail. Research the company’s dress code or style.
Choose solid colors that contrast with your background, avoid flashy jewelry or accessories, and groom your hair and face.
A recent survey revealed that 83% of recruiters consider a candidate’s attire as a decisive factor in the hiring process.
