Understanding the Stages of Grief in the Context of a Layoff

When you go through a layoff, the emotional journey often mimics the stages of grief. These stages—denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance—provide a framework to understand and process what you’re going through.

Though everyone’s experience is unique, these stages can help normalize what you may be feeling and remind you that it’s okay to grieve the loss of this chapter in your life.

The Five Stages of Grieving a Layoff

1. Denial

“This can’t be happening to me. They must have made a mistake.” The words echo in your mind as the reality starts to sink in. You sit there, stunned, heart racing, trying to process what just happened.

Desperately, you grab your phone, refreshing your email over and over, hoping for some kind of follow-up—a reversal, a clarification, anything to suggest this isn’t real. But let’s be honest: HR doesn’t usually send a second email saying, “Oops, never mind.”

The initial shock can feel overwhelming, almost like a punch to the gut that leaves you reeling. Accepting the reality is step one, even though it's the hardest step to take, and it’s okay to give yourself time to feel all the emotions that come with it.

2. Anger

This stage? Spicy. You might feel frustrated, upset, or downright angry—at the company, the economy, or even Dave from accounting (no real reason, he just seems like an easy target).

Anger is a natural response to a tough situation like this, but it’s important to channel it productively.

Take a walk, vent to a friend, or write down your thoughts in a journal.

Whatever you do, there’s no need to take it out on LinkedIn by posting an all-caps rant that you might regret later. Use this energy to refocus and take your next steps.

3. Bargaining

The “what if” stage. It’s that moment when your mind spirals into overthinking, replaying every decision you made leading up to the layoff. What if you had worked overtime every weekend to show extra dedication? What if you had taken on that one project no one else wanted? What if you laughed a little harder at your manager's jokes or networked more at company events?

These thoughts can feel overwhelming, making you question your worth or wonder if you could have somehow prevented it.

But here’s the truth—layoffs often have little to do with individual performance. Decisions like these are usually driven by larger factors, such as budget cuts, restructuring, or shifts in company priorities. It’s important to remind yourself that it’s not all on you.

4. Depression

Cue the playlists of sad songs and binges of comfort food. This is the hardest stage of moving on from a job. You’re not just leaving a workplace; you’re mourning your old life, your routine, your sense of security, and the friendships you built with coworkers who felt like family.

It’s normal to feel a mix of sadness, anxiety, and even regret as you process this big change. But rest assured, this phase doesn’t last forever.

With time, you’ll adjust to your new reality and start to see opportunities where there once seemed to be only loss.

5. Acceptance

Eventually, the fog lifts, and clarity begins to set in. You start to see that while losing a job is undeniably painful, it isn’t the end of the story—it’s simply a plot twist in the journey of your career.

It’s okay to feel the emotions that come with the loss, but with time, you’ll realize that this change can also be an opportunity.

With acceptance comes a renewed energy, a chance to reflect on what you truly want, and the drive to start strategizing your next career move. Whether it’s learning a new skill, exploring a different industry, or doubling down on your passions, this moment can be the beginning of something even greater.

How to Move Forward

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to figure this out alone.

Taking it one step at a time can help turn this overwhelming transition into a manageable process.

Checklist for Moving Forward After a Layoff

  1. Allow Yourself to Grieve: It’s okay to feel the loss and allow yourself to experience the emotions that come with it. Grieving is a natural part of healing, and taking the time to process your feelings fully before rushing into action is important. Give yourself space to reflect and come to terms with what you’re going through.

  2. Assess Your Finances: Take a hard look at your budget and identify areas where you can cut back on expenses, even if only temporarily, until you’re back on your feet. Review your monthly spending on non-essential items like dining out, subscriptions, or entertainment, and prioritize the essentials such as rent, utilities, and groceries. Making small changes now can ease financial strain and help you regain stability over time.

  3. Expand Your Network: Reach out to former colleagues, classmates, or industry contacts to reconnect and nurture your professional network. A simple message or email can go a long way in rekindling old relationships. Consider inviting them for a friendly coffee chat to catch up on their latest projects and share your own updates. You never know—this casual conversation could lead to valuable insights, opportunities, or even your next career move.

  4. Upskill or Reskill: This could be the perfect time to pick up a certification or take an online course that boosts your value in the job market. Whether it's learning a new skill, improving on existing ones, or exploring a completely new field, investing in your professional development not only enhances your resume but also opens up new career opportunities.

  5. Hire a Job Search Strategist (with Executive Recruitment Experience): Finding a job in today’s competitive market requires more than simply sending out 50 resumes a day and hoping for the best. It’s about working smarter, not harder, and that’s where a Job Search Strategist can make all the difference. Especially if they have a background as an Executive Recruiter, they bring insider knowledge of the hiring process and can help you craft a tailored job search plan designed specifically for your goals and industry. They’ll work with you to highlight your unique strengths, refine your resume and LinkedIn profile, and connect you to hidden opportunities that aren’t always advertised on job boards. Plus, they’ll provide valuable tips on nailing interviews and negotiating offers. The best part? A Job Search Strategist will keep you motivated and focused, offering guidance and support when the process feels overwhelming or exhausting. With the right strategy and support, landing your dream job becomes far more achievable.
